COVID-19 is an illness caused by a coronavirus that can spread from person to person. The virus was first detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, China and has since spread globally. Here is what you need to know.

How do I become infected with COVID-19?

  • COVID-19 is primarily spread from person to person via respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.

  • You may also contract COVID-19 by touching a surface or object with the virus on it, and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

  • Find more information here.

How do I protect myself?

Symptoms

Not everyone who gets coronavirus has symptoms, but when they do they can range from mild to severe. These are the primary symptoms:

  • Fever

  • Cough

  • Fatigue

  • Shortness of breath

  • Headache

Some people may experience also:

  • Body aches

  • Nasal congestion

  • Runny nose

  • Sore throat

  • Diarrhea

If you, or someone you know are experiencing any of the following symptoms, please go to a hospital immediately. You are having a medical emergency.

  • Severe difficulty breathing (e.g., struggling for each breath, speaking in single words)

  • Severe chest pain

  • Confusion (for example, unsure of where you are)

  • Lost consciousness or extreme difficulty waking up

  • A high fever (your temperature is above 38° Celsius/100.4° Fahrenheit)

What should I do if I get sick?

Am I at increased risk of complications from COVID-19?

If you are over the age of 60, or if any of the following conditions apply to you, you are at increased risk of complications from COVID-19:

  • I am undergoing a medical treatment that suppresses my immune system (for example, HIV/AIDS, cancer/chemotherapy/radiation).

  • I have a chronic health condition (for example, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart condition).

  • I have a respiratory or lung condition.

  • I have been treated for tuberculosis.

If one or more of the above apply to you, take additional precautions to prevent getting infected with COVID-19. Monitor your symptoms carefully and if they become more serious, call the ministry hotlines immediately. You can read more information for those at higher risk of coronavirus complications here and here

COVID-19 is a potentially deadly disease regardless of your age or pre-existing conditions.

What are the current government restrictions?

July 27th Update:

  • The Nationwide Curfew shall remain in force for a further 30 days.

  • There will be no sale of alcoholic drinks and beverages in eateries and restaurants across the Territory of the Republic of Kenya, effective at midnight today, for the next 30 days.

  • The closing time for restaurants and eateries has been amended from 8pm to 7pm, starting today at midnight, for the next 30 days.

  • Bars shall remain closed until further notice.

  • That the Inspector–General of the National Police Service shall cause withdrawal of all licenses for bars operating in breach of this directive.

  • That the Inspector General shall file a weekly return of all bars whose licenses have been withdrawn to the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government.

  • That the Inspector General of Police shall ensure that his officers spare no mheshimiwa, or individual, regardless of social status or rank, who is either out after curfew or who flaunts the health protocols without being an essential worker. The rules are for all of us, and rank or status does not exempt you from them.

  • That the National Government Administration Officers and the National Police Service will strictly enforce Ministry of Health protocols on public gatherings, and particularly funerals.

  • That strict personal sanction will ensue to all police and National Administration officers in whose areas of jurisdiction there is breach of the set guidelines.

  • That the Ministry of Health will develop a protocol to temporarily retain retired anesthetists and ICU staff to support the medical staff assigned to dealing with serious COVID-19 cases in the Counties.

  • That any Government Institutions including all sporting facilities, stadia and educational institutions and other Government facilities, upon designation by the Cabinet Secretary for Health as a public health facility, shall be availed to the Ministry of Health for Isolation and Quarantine purposes.

COVID-19 advice for Kenyans

  • Pay with M-Pesa to avoid handling cash, or touching cards and machines.
  • When traveling in matatus, open the windows and use a cloth to open and close doors.

  • Avoid close contact with people sneezing or coughing in buses or matatus.

  • Try to stay as distant as possible from neighbors or members of your community who might be ill or infected with COVID-19.

  • If it’s difficult for you to self isolate because you don’t have the space at home, consider speaking to your neighbours to make a community plan if someone gets sick, or if there is an outbreak

    • You can read more about how to create a plan within your community here.

  • Find more information here.

  • Find guidelines on Mental Health Support here.

Follow these guidelines if you are infected with COVID-19 or suspect you might have been:

  • Stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom if available.

  • Disinfect surfaces and clothing.

  • Avoid sharing household items. Wash items thoroughly after use and have others cook for you.

  • No visitors unless the person needs to be in your home.

  • Do not share beds and other sleeping spaces. If there aren’t alternatives, be creative on how to avoid contact with others. Create barriers while sleeping, others or you should opt to sleep on the floor to maintain a distance.

  • If you have elderly people living with you in your home, please try to find an alternative living arrangement for the duration of your self-isolation. It is important to keep your elderly loved ones as protected as possible.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, often. If you don’t have access to running water, use an alcohol based hand-sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol. You can make your own by following the instructions here.

  • Wear a face mask. If you don’t have one, you can make your own by following these instructions (or these)

You can view the Ministry of Health’s self-isolation guidelines here. Antara Health also has a great guide that you can view here.

In addition to the above, you should read the WHO guides for home care for sick people, members of the household, and for caregivers.

  1. Can COVID-19 virus be transmitted in areas with hot and humid climates?

From the evidence so far, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including areas with hot and humid weather.

  2. If I do not show symptoms, am I OK?

The incubation window is on average one week. Some people show symptoms later than others. Some people do not show symptoms at all. This does not mean that they are not able to transmit the virus to others.

  3. Can I catch COVID-19 from the feces of someone with the disease?

The risk of catching COVID-19 from the feces of an infected person appears to be low. While initial investigations suggest the virus may be present in feces in some cases, spread through this route is not a main feature of the outbreak.

  4. Is my dog still allowed in the house?

Except one case registered in Hong Kong, there is no other evidence that the COVID-19 can affect dogs, nor that dogs can transmit it to other animals, including humans.

  5. Can I get antibiotics against COVID-19?

Antibiotics do not work against viruses, they can only fight bacterial infections. COVID-19 is caused by a virus, so antibiotics will not work.

  6. Can I kill the virus by taking a hot bath?

Taking a hot bath will not prevent you from catching COVID-19 or to get better if you have it already. Your normal body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the temperature of your bath or shower. Taking a hot bath with extremely hot water can be harmful, as it can burn you. The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is by frequently cleaning your hands.

  7. Can mosquitoes transmit COVID-19?

No, there is no information nor evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus can be transmitted by mosquitoes. To protect yourself, clean your hands frequently with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Moreover, avoid close contact with anyone who is coughing and sneezing.

  8. Can hand driers kill COVID-19?

No, virus cannot be killed by hand driers. Just remember to keep your hands clean and dry them thoroughly by using paper towels or a warm air dryer.

  9. Does the new coronavirus affect only old people, or are younger people also susceptible?

People of all ages can be infected by the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus. WHO advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, for example by following good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene.

  10. If I drink a lot of hot water, am I going to kill the virus?

No, you are not killing the virus if you drink hot water. Keeping yourself hydrated is always good, but do not risk burning yourself with hot drinks: it is going to harm you, not the virus.

  11. Is there a medicine to prevent or treat the new coronavirus?

To date, there is no specific medicine to prevent or treat the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The people affected should receive appropriate care to relieve and treat symptoms, and those with severe illness should receive ad hoc supportive care. Some specific treatments are under investigation, and will be tested through clinical trials. WHO is helping to accelerate research and development efforts with a range or partners.

  12. Can an ultraviolet disinfection lamp kill the new coronavirus?

UV lamps should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of skin as UV radiation can cause skin irritation.

  13. Can spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body kill the new coronavirus?

No. Spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body will not kill viruses that have already entered your body. Spraying such substances can be harmful to clothes or mucous membranes (i.e. eyes, mouth). Be aware that both alcohol and chlorine can be useful to disinfect surfaces, but they need to be used under appropriate recommendations.

  14. Can regularly rinsing your nose with saline help prevent infection with the new coronavirus?

No. There is no evidence that regularly rinsing the nose with saline has protected people from infection with the new coronavirus. There is some limited evidence that regularly rinsing nose with saline can help people recover more quickly from the common cold. However, regularly rinsing the nose has not been shown to prevent respiratory infections.
