About Afya Kamili Medical Centre
Located in Birika town, along the Kiserian-Isinya Road, Afya Kamili Medical Centre serves a sparsely populated area where people live far away from the town. Due to the remote location of the area, the doctors at the facility conduct community outreach programs to reach more people in the interior and provide essential medical services such as ultrasound scans and other services. The facility offers various services including consultation, ante/postnatal care, family planning, minor surgeries and laboratory services.
The challenge
Dr. Daniel Alim and his team faced numerous limitations with their traditional ultrasound device at Afya Kamili Medical Centre. The big machine was cumbersome to carry, lacking in storage and sharing capabilities and unreliable in producing accurate diagnoses. Patients often had to be referred to Kiserian, a town 24 km away, for proper evaluation. In addition, Afya Kamili conducts regular community outreach programs where the bulky ultrasound could not be carried and continuous power input was not available. Sharing results with patients was also cumbersome, especially in the field.
